Partnerships for Tomorrow, PATA Announces Vision 2020

Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) – October 7, 2019 (travelindex.com) – In line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has announced its theme for 2020: ‘Partnerships for Tomorrow’. As noted in the SDGs, partnerships for the goals is the primary focus of Sustainable Development Goal 17 – Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

The announcement was made by PATA CEO Dr Mario Hardy during the PATA Board Meeting on Saturday, September 21 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, held in conjunction with PATA Travel Mart 2019.

“The world is seeing dramatic social, political, environmental and economic changes, particularly in relation to the potentially irreversible damage to our planet caused by climate change.  Against this backdrop, there is an urgent need to work towards the development of a more responsible and sustainable travel and tourism industry,” said PATA CEO Dr Mario Hardy. “The challenges that we face are complex and require coordination from all industry stakeholders across all sectors. Only through concerted efforts can we preserve and protect the world for future generations to come.”

In acting as a catalyst for the responsible development of travel and tourism to, from and within the Asia Pacific region, PATA remains committed to the issues of sustainability and social responsibility by forging relationships with like-minded organizations in order to enhance the sustainable growth, value and quality of travel and tourism to-from-and-within, the region.

Furthermore, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development, adopted by the United Nations, provides an ambitious agenda for peace, prosperity, people and the planet. At its core are the 17 SDGs, which are a call for action for all countries and organisations to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and solve climate change by 2030.

To achieve such goals PATA understands the need to partner with both the public and private sector and invites all tourism stakeholders to embrace the wellbeing of the planet and together contribute to the achievement of the SDGs under PATA’s vision for 2020: ‘Partnerships for Tomorrow’.

The annual theme will permeate all of the Association’s activities for the calendar year, and be leveraged to drive greater strategic alignment and advanced planning between all PATA business units. Furthermore, PATA will use initiatives that include the theme as a multi-faceted PR campaign to drive greater media awareness of the need for a sustainable tomorrow, within the membership community and at large.

In line with its vision for next year, the Association’s recent partnership between ADB Ventures and Plug and Play will provide the first step for PATA to empower its hospitality members to leave a positive impact on countries, destinations, local communities and the surrounding environment.
